Swiss salaries are among the highest in the world, but so are rent, insurance and food prices. A budget helps you see the full picture, including payments that come only once a year.
Fixed costs first
- Rent and utilities (often 25–35 % of net income).
- Health insurance premiums (CHF 300–500 per adult per month).
- Taxes: unlike in other countries, employees usually pay tax in instalments or one bill; set aside 8–20 % of gross income if no tax is withheld.
- Transport, phone, internet, liability and household insurance.

Variable costs
Groceries are about 30–50 % more expensive than in neighbouring countries; discounters such as Aldi and Lidl and weekly deals help. Eating out is costly – meal-prep and lunch-at-home habits create big savings.
A practical method
- Set up a salary account and a separate fixed-costs account.
- Automate savings the day salary arrives (pillar 3a first, then free investments).
- Review recurring subscriptions every six months.
- Build an emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.
- Cost with half-fare card
- Cost with GA

Transport
A car costs CHF 700–1,000 per month all-in. Check whether a half-fare card or GA travelcard could replace it; our GA vs. Halbtax calculator shows the break-even.
